Your Reactions Are Messengers – What Are They Trying to Say?
Every reaction holds a story your mind hasn’t fully processed yet
You overreact, and then regret it.
You shut down, and don’t know why.
You feel too much, too fast or nothing at all.
And then you think:
“What’s wrong with me?”
But what if nothing’s wrong?
What if your reactions aren’t overreactions — but messages?
Your nervous system isn’t irrational.
It’s intelligent.
It responds to patterns, memories, and meaning.
Even when you’re not consciously aware of it.
The key is not to shame your reaction, but to listen to it.
Let’s decode what it might be trying to tell you.
1️⃣ Anger
Often says:
➡ “My boundary was crossed.”
➡ “I feel powerless.”
➡ “This feels unfair.”
Anger isn’t bad.
It’s an alert system.
But when ignored or repressed, it becomes explosive instead of expressive.
Try asking:
→ What value or boundary feels violated here?
2️⃣ Anxiety
Often says:
➡ “Something feels uncertain.”
➡ “I don’t feel prepared.”
➡ “I’m afraid I’ll lose control.”
Anxiety isn’t always about danger —
sometimes it’s about the absence of safety.
Try asking:
→ What am I afraid will happen if I stop trying to manage everything?
3️⃣ Emotional Numbness
Often says:
➡ “I’m overloaded.”
➡ “I’ve been in survival mode.”
➡ “Feeling everything is too much right now.”
Numbness isn’t a failure to feel —
it’s a temporary pause button your body presses to protect you.
Try asking:
→ What emotions have I been avoiding?
4️⃣ Defensiveness
Often says:
➡ “I feel misunderstood.”
➡ “I’m scared you’re right.”
➡ “I don’t feel safe being wrong.”
Defensiveness is often fear dressed as certainty.
Not because you’re bad — but because you want to protect your identity or self-worth.
Try asking:
→ What part of me feels threatened right now?
5️⃣ Over-Apologizing
Often says:
➡ “I don’t want to be rejected.”
➡ “I feel like a burden.”
➡ “I learned that pleasing keeps me safe.”
This is less about politeness and more about emotional survival.
Try asking:
→ Where did I learn that being small = being safe?
Your Body Remembers. Your Reactions Reflect.
You don’t choose every reaction consciously — but you can learn from each one.
Next time you feel yourself spiraling, snapping, shutting down, or over-explaining, pause.
Not to fix it.
Just to ask it something.
Because reactions are data.
When you stop judging them and start listening to them, they become wisdom.
As therapist, Vienna Pharaon says:
“Your trigger is your teacher.”
So, what’s one recent reaction you’re curious about, not ashamed of?
